Get Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 for free
There's already a perfectly good free version, but why not go Pro and get some nifty extras, including a VBA editor and save-to-xlsx support?
A couple weeks back I suggested that Kingsoft Office Free 2013 might just be the best Microsoft Office alternative you can get, especially if you need only the core elements: word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
Kingsoft offers a Pro version, of course, one that includes more goodies. A one-year license normally sells for $29.95, but today only, Giveaway of the Day has Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 (Win) absolutely free.
Let me note right here that this version has just a few key benefits over its free counterpart: a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor, support for macros in the word processor, and support for saving spreadsheets in xlsx format. (The free version can open xlsx files, along with docx and pptx, but saving is limited to the older formats--doc, ppt, and xls.)
If you want to learn more about the differences between versions, Kingsoft has a comparison table -- but it hasn't been updated to reflect the 2013 editions. In any case, if the aforementioned features sound worthwhile to you, by all means grab Office Professional.
To do so, head to the giveaway page, scroll down a bit, then click the "Download Kingsoft Office Suite Professional 2013 now" link that's roughly in the center of the page. That'll net you a zip file containing the installer, which you'll need to run today in order to get the software activated.
That's the only real condition here. Well, there's one more: You don't get tech support. (Hey, you're getting this free, remember -- you can't have everything.) And, of course, the license expires after one year. What happens after that? The suite effectively becomes a document viewer. But no problem: You can either pony up $29.95 to keep using it or just install the free edition. Either way, it's 2014's problem.
Personally, I get everything I need from Kingsoft Office Free 2013. But I always like the option of going Pro when it's similarly free. If you need a Microsoft-caliber office suite without the Microsoft price, you can't go wrong with either one of these.
Bonus deal: What's better than a 22-inch desktop monitor? A 23-inch desktop monitor, of course, especially when it's priced below what you'd typically pay for a 22-incher. For a limited time, and while supplies last, TigerDirect has the Acer UM.VG6AA.B01 23-inch LED monitor for $109.99, plus around $7 for shipping. It's a fairly basic display, with VGA and DVI inputs and a 5ms response time, but it includes the awesomeness of Acer's 36-month warranty.
