NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M Specifications Confirmed – Rebranded GTX 780M With 8 GB VRAM, Faster Clocks

NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce GTX 880M mobility chip has been leaked and its specifications have been confirmed by NotebookReview Forums (via Videocardz). According to the leaked information, the GeForce 800M mobility GTX lineup from NVIDIA would be based on the current Kepler architecture.

The flagship GeForce GTX 880M and several other GeForce 800M series mobility chips were leaked by vendor CLEVO a while ago. NVIDIA’s first tier chips would be MXM design which means they would be interchangeable, upgradable and even offer SLI support on some notebook designs. Following is the list of the MXM chips:

• GeForce GTX 880M 8 GB / N15E-GX-A2
• GeForce GTX 870M 6 GB / N15P-GT
• GeForce GTX 860M 4 GB / N15P-GX

Next up, we have the entry level models which will feature the onboard design which mean that these GPUs will be permanently soldered to the mainboard hence no upgrading can be possible. The GeForce 800M GT lineup will include the following GPUs:

• GeForce GTX 860M 2 GB GDDR5 / N15P-GX
• GeForce GTX 850M 2 GB DDR3 / N15P-GT
• GeForce GT 840M 2 GB DDR3 / N15S-GT1

It looks like both AMD (R9 M290X)and NVIDIA have chips with the same specifications (technically rebrands) which span their three generation of GPU series (AMD: HD 7000/ HD 8000/ R M200) (NVIDIA: GeForce 600M/ GeForce 700M/ GeForce 800M). The new chips from both vendors are either too power hungry that they cannot be integrated into notebooks at the moment or they are just waiting for the launch of their next generation GPUs and then go ahead to launch new generation of mobility parts.

The GeForce GTX 880M is technically the same chip as the GeForce GTX 680M and GTX 780M with 1536 Cuda Cores, 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs but it has some key improvements. The VRAM has been expanded to 8 GB GDDR5 and the clock speeds have been bumped to 954 MHz base and 933 MHz boost although the memory is clocked at 5 GHz effective rate. The memory runs along a 256-bit interface pumping out 160 GB/s bandwidth though we don’t know how the higher VRAM would benefit users in terms of raw performance numbers.

Preliminary performance results posted on the website reveal a 10-15% performance improvement over the GTX 780M achieved with the higher clock speeds. Following are a few results of the GTX 880M in 3DMark 11 and 3DMark 2013:
